Q:

Latest Windows 11 update reportedly causes display issues for some gamers

PC Gamer’s Jacob Fox reports that the latest Windows 11 update (KB5101650) may be causing display issues on some gaming PCs.

After installing the update, his 400 Hz gaming monitor would no longer run at its maximum refresh rate. At 400 Hz, the display repeatedly went black and reconnected every few seconds. Even at 360 Hz and 300 Hz, the issue persisted, while 240 Hz remained stable.

Other users, particularly those with AMD graphics cards, have also reported display and graphics problems after installing the update, although Microsoft has not officially confirmed a widespread graphics bug. Microsoft has, however, paused the update for some Dell PCs due to separate compatibility issues affecting performance and system behavior.

Has anyone else experienced display problems after installing KB5101650?

Before rolling back Windows, I’d recommend updating your GPU driver, monitor firmware, and chipset drivers first. If none of that helps, uninstalling the latest cumulative update is probably the safest temporary workaround until Microsoft investigates.

If a Windows update suddenly drops your monitor from 400 Hz to 240 Hz, that’s incredibly frustrating. High-refresh displays aren’t cheap, so I’d probably roll back the update until a fix is available.

There are quite a few reports on Reddit from AMD users with similar symptoms. Until Microsoft or AMD says something officially, I’d avoid chasing hardware problems if the issue only started after Windows Update.

No issues here on an RTX 5080. I’ve been running KB5101650 for two days with a 240 Hz monitor and everything has been perfectly stable. Seems like the problem might only affect certain hardware combinations.

I’m using an RX 9070 XT, and after updating I started getting random black screens while gaming. At first I thought it was my DisplayPort cable, but now I’m wondering if Windows is the culprit.
