Yep. They were not designed to be put in and taken out all the time. They were meant to be put in a device and left there. The best way to use them is to use the actual device as a reader connected to a computer.
Try using AirDrop instead of cable- often avoids these issues.
There might be some companies that you could send it to and they can take it apart and try to recover the files off of it. If I were you, try your best to not move it anymore than it is now and find someone to mail it to, they like solder stuff back together and attach individual wires and stuff to it, its kinda wild but it works!
