Before trying too many fixes, I’d connect the phone to a computer and copy everything you can still access. Having a backup gives you room to experiment.

Yeah. I forced a media rescan and rebooted. Most folders came back afterward.

Did you end up fixing it?

I had almost the exact thing happen on my S21 after a One UI update.
Photos were still physically on the phone, but Gallery acted like they didn’t exist.

That’s encouraging.
Usually if image files still exist, the problem is software-related. Could be a media database issue after the update.

Just tried that.
It actually found a lot more image files than Gallery is showing. Some are inside folders with weird names I’ve never seen before.

Try a different file manager and search the entire storage for JPG files.
Samsung’s file manager doesn’t always make it easy to spot everything

Yeah, I checked.
The DCIM folder is there, but the Camera folder only contains a handful of recent photos. Definitely not thousands of pictures.

If storage usage hasn’t changed, I’d avoid assuming the photos are gone. It sounds more like the phone isn’t indexing them correctly.
Have you checked the DCIM folder with a file manager?

Hey everyone,
Something really weird happened to my Samsung Galaxy S22 this week.
The phone installed a software update overnight. The next day I opened Gallery and noticed almost all my photos were gone. I’d estimate 90% of them disappeared.
The strange part is that my storage is still showing around 85GB used, which is pretty much what it was before. That’s why I’m confused. If the photos were deleted, shouldn’t the storage usage drop?
Things I’ve already checked:
• Gallery Trash is empty
• Google Photos only has older backups
• Samsung Cloud doesn’t have recent backups
• Restarted phone several times
• Cleared Gallery cache and data
Most of the missing photos are family photos from the last year, so I’m getting pretty nervous.
Has anyone seen this happen after an update?

Hi all! Yesterday, I was importing photos from my SD card to my phone using an SD card reader and Lightroom when about half way through, my phone crashed for some reason. Half of the pictures imported correctly to Lightroom although the remaining images did not. Now, whenever I plug the SD card into the reader, it does not show up, although the SD card still stores and displays photos on my camera. I was wondering if my phone powering off caused my card to corrupt, and If there is any way to import the photos into Lightroom as RAW’s. I’ve tried Cannon’s camera connect app but with all the pictures i’d like to import, it would take far too long.

Also, maybe the way I import photos is not the most optimal so if there is a better/more efficient way I would really appreciate it!

Yes, it is possible to recover deleted files from an SD card on Windows if the data hasn’t been overwritten yet. The first thing you should do is stop using the SD card immediately to avoid replacing the deleted data with new files. Many users successfully recover photos, videos, and documents by using recovery tools before the storage sectors get overwritten.

You can try Windows File Recovery, which is Microsoft’s command-line recovery utility, or use trusted SD card recovery software that supports FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS file systems. Deep scan mode is usually more effective for permanently deleted files or formatted SD cards. Some recovery tools can even restore RAW photos and files from corrupted or inaccessible SD cards.

Also, if the SD card shows as RAW or asks for formatting, avoid formatting it again before recovery. In many cases, creating a backup image of the SD card first improves recovery success and protects the original data.

I’d recommend scanning the SD card as soon as possible because recovery chances decrease once new data gets written to the card.
