Yes — some reviewers and users think the Software Update UI in System Settings is needlessly confusing. In particular, the way “Update” and “Upgrade” buttons are styled, and the presence of small information (“ⓘ”) icons next to them, can make it unclear what clicking a button will actually do (e.g., update the current macOS version vs. install the big Tahoe upgrade).

Users on discussion boards have echoed this frustration, saying the UI design makes it easy to accidentally trigger a major upgrade when you intended only a minor update.

Do people find the Software Update UI confusing for upgrading to macOS 26 Tahoe?

Many users have reported random freezes, slow performance, and crashes after updating to macOS Tahoe. A frequent culprit appears to be system services like Spotlight, which may over-consume resources or behave differently under Tahoe. Turning off certain Spotlight features (like “Show Related Content” and analytics settings) has helped some people stop freezes.

Apple’s community forums also show reports of severe lag and cursor hangs, suggesting it’s not limited to a single model.

Common fixes people try include:

  • Updating macOS to the latest minor release (where Apple has patched bugs).
  • Booting in Safe Mode to isolate problematic login items or extensions.
  • Resetting NVRAM/PRAM and reinstalling the OS.

Why is macOS Tahoe freezing and crashing my MacBook?

In a recent incident, we recently dealt with a security issue involving an enterprise-level AI solution. During the remedial process, we had to revert changes, reimage some systems, as well as optimize user environments.

The security issue has been solved, but the problem is that some important files that were in the system locally and synchronized online have disappeared after doing a system cleanup. Our backups restored everything for us, though some user files and project files were not restored.

Has anyone experienced such a situation after a major security threat? Are there any methods to restore data that is normally lost in the remediation process, especially in cases of reimaged computers?

I recently lost important files from a USB drive after an improper eject. The drive now shows up, but a number of folders are missing and a few files won’t open.

Before resorting to expensive professional recovery services, can anyone suggest some software-based steps that actually work to recover data from corrupted or otherwise inaccessible USB drives?

Urgent help needed.

I personally faced a situation involving ransomware, and the affected systems have since been cleaned and reimaged. Although most data was recovered using the backup system, it is apparent that some critical data is missing and could have been deleted as a result of the attack.

In those circumstances, what are the best ways available for restoration of leftover/partially lost data from the affected drives?

Are there ways to scan storage devices for data that didn’t come back via backup? Finding ways of recovery that works!

any help would be appreciated.

This makes sense. After trying a bunch of fixes with no luck, I ended up using a data recovery tool and was actually able to get my file back. Here’s the one I used: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9pm3tvx83ddm?hl=en-US&gl=IN

A heads-up for everyone here, the January 2026 Windows 11 updates caused serious stability bugs – some PCs couldn’t shut down, hibernate, or even log in remotely – forcing Microsoft to release emergency out-of-band patches for 25H2 and other versions. These rollout problems might help explain some of the data loss/instability reports people are seeing.

25H2 has been messy for a lot of people, especially with file indexing and USB instability. If rollback is gone and system tools failed, stop writing to the drive and try a reliable data recovery software before things get overwritten.

Yeah!!

I updated to Windows 11 25H2 as well and found a few files missing and some folders behaving oddly later. I have not found a clear solution yet, but running disk checks. Would be interested to know if anyone managed to recover their files or identify the exact cause.

I tried the same manual steps — chkdsk, SFC, DISM, and Previous Versions — but unfortunately it didn’t recover anything for me either. Files are still missing or corrupted.

Dude, I’m right there with you in the same boat with 25H2 after that January patch it’s a complete nightmare! The major problems I’m having are as follows: random restarts have deleted 3 days’ worth of work files, my Documents folder is listed as 0KB (files are there but won’t open), my USB drives are constantly disconnecting during file transfer, and Explorer is freezing every 10 minutes when trying to access the corrupted folders.

What I’ve attempted (and largely failed at):

chkdsk C: /f /r took 6 hours, detected bad sectors but couldn’t recover anything

The System Restore points were all gone after the update

Rollback option grayed out (past 10 days)

SFC /scannow and DISM continue to fail with “source files corrupted” errors

This KB5074109 update just plain broke file system integrity for me. Anyone else experiencing USB detection failure + Explorer crashes? What build are you on exactly? (Win+R > winver)

Complete productivity killer—fixes needed ASAP!

I lost around 10–15 GB of photos. The folders are still there but the files inside are gone. Checked Recycle Bin, Previous Versions — nothing. This update seems risky.

Yes, same issue here. Right after the 25H2 update, some folders were empty and a few Excel files became unreadable. At first I thought it was an update glitch, but looks like many are affected.
