Cannot play the video file
Sometimes when I try to play my old videos, there’s a message that comes up on the screen like ‘Cannot play the file’, ‘File is corrupted’, and ‘Unsupported format’. What could be the reason for that?

Lizz, Everybody asked what we should do but you asked a very good and valid question, “What should not be done?” So you must not overwrite the storage device on which you have a corrupted file. Do not use any un reputed free software. And the most important thing is do not open(physically) your storage device.
What should not be done in case of a corrupted video file?
In this case recovery is a bit tough but still there are chances if you have a good condition video sample from the same storage device and the same sitting, in that case we can try a specialized service.
Okay, now I understand what I can do to make it play, but what if the file is badly damaged?
In most of the cases, yes, we can recover a corrupted video file, but it largely depends on the level of corruption. Try a few of my suggestions, which I personally use whenever I face any such situation.
1. Try to play the corrupted media in the latest media playing software i.e. VLC media player comes with built-in-repair features for AVI files.
2. Second is to use a video repair software that will scan your damaged file and try to rebuild it.
Do you have any solution for this?

Hmmm, so sometimes it takes a long time to read the video file, and most of the time the video is not playing at all, it is stuck at a certain frame with a distorted sound. And the most annoying thing is that the storage device shows 0 kb even if a large 1 gb file in it.
Please tell me what exactly happens when you try to play the video?
There are many reasons for video file corruption, some common reasons are
1.Improper ejection of storage device like pulling out USB without closing the software,
2. Hardware issues that may have a bad sector on the storage unit, moisture, and non visible damage.
3. Virus attack that can partly, if not totally damage the videos.
Thanks, Liora for prompt response, but what causes file corruption?
That means your video files are damaged and that makes them unplayable/readable fully or partially, in one line your video files are corrupted.
